A care facility for residents who have complex nursing needs and also live with dementia, Fernihurst is a unique home where specialist care is provided by a devoted and dedicated team.
The nursing home has a Namaste room which is a calm and tranquil retreat that promotes relaxation. People who live with dementia and other forms of memory loss can at times feel agitated. In this room, there is a snoozelyn area with soothing lights and images, calming music, tactile furnishings and nostalgic photographs of days gone by in Exmouth. The smell of lavender and lemon fills the room and there is also special dough, which is calming as you massage it in your hands to release different aromatic smells. Members of the team are also trained to give our residents a relaxing hand and scalp massage.
Music therapy is also something our residents love and we are often joined by a lady from Singing for the Brain, an Alzheimer’s Society initiative which brings joy to people living with dementia. Another therapeutic activity which residents at the nursing home love, is spending time with birds and animals. Whether owls, guinea pigs, ducks, rabbits – or even the occasional horse - Fernihurst’s residents love animal therapy sessions.
For those who thrive on getting out and about, the local ‘Whizzy Bus’, makes a special stop at our nursing home every week to take our residents on delightful trips around Exmouth. These excursions are the perfect prompt to help our residents to recall happy memories of places they grew up or worked. And of course, the all-important ice cream stop at the beaches of Sidmouth or Budleigh.
Fernihurst also has a summer house, a focal point of garden parties. Each month this area is to be transformed with a different theme. Soon our residents will see an ice cream parlour, an old-fashioned sweet shop and at Christmas, it will become a scene from a winter wonderland, with mulled cider and all things festive. At Christmas, the local Devoncourt Hotel, which is well known in Exmouth for its spectacular lights display, saves our residents front row seat for the grand switch on. With hot chocolate, they have a prime position to see this stunning display, which marks the start of Christmas.
In the main garden, which is completely enclosed, we have wheelchair friendly pathways, as well as special sensory features for our residents living with dementia. When you walk past certain points in this garden the sounds of relaxing ocean waves and animal noises play through special sensors. This garden also has a water feature and a giant canopy which looks like the sails of a ship. This area is wonderful for our spontaneous garden parties, where there is usually a coconut shy and plenty of singing!
Fernihurst is also proud to be a Member of the Exmouth Carers’ Group. This group, which is made up care organisations across the area, shares best practice and is supported by Age UK.
It is usual for residents in care homes to contribute to the cost of their own care. Some people have the resources to pay for their care in full, whilst others make means-tested contributions. Our weekly fees are individual to each of our residents and are subject to a pre-admission assessment, which is required to truly understand the level of care and support needed.
Our 2022 weekly care fees for residential care start from £1,124, but maybe in the region of 20% more*, dependent on your care needs and the type of bedroom that is right for you, from our standard rooms to our premium bedroom options.
*If you require more specialist care such as 1-2-1 support, your weekly fee could be higher.
