With spectacular views over the River Nith and the well-known Criffel hill in Dumfries, our care home is in the very heart of the Burns Country. A short distance from the Robert Burns Mausoleum, one of the most historic attractions in the area, Allanbank is surrounded by Scottish heritage.

The layout of the home, with individual suites off two central courtyards, reflects the very varied and individual needs of our residents. Each is very unique, just like the people we care for. Our highly trained team supports residents with a wide range of needs, including people living with dementia, with nursing needs, in residential care, as well as younger adults with mental health and other complex requirements.

Engaged in our local community

At Allanbank we are proud of the strong relationships our care home has with community groups in Dumfries & Galloway. Every week youngsters from a primary school visit to take part in activities, from baking and reading to arts and crafts. And of course, our residents are the perfect audience for their school plays and performances!

We have access to some fantastic activities, including walking football groups and dementia-friendly cinema screenings with Alzheimer’s Scotland.

Our residents living with dementia love the Forget-Me-Not Garden Group at HMP Dumfries. In partnership with Dumfries & Galloway NHS, a sensory garden has been created by the prisoners to enable them to give something back to the community. It’s regularly opened exclusively for residents from care homes. Whether doing a spot of light weeding to help maintain the garden or simply sitting and enjoying the tranquillity, our residents really benefit from this inspiring project. The prisoners also make planters and other items for our garden at Allanbank – and we often leave with bags of tomatoes and other delicious homegrown produce. Our residents are especially fond of the ‘Cup a Soup’ planter created especially for us, which is designed to plant everything you could need to make the perfect soup.

Our home also has a fantastic link with Queen of the South Football Club, which kindly gives us free tickets to take our residents to their home matches, where they can sit in their own special area.

We also have our Allanbank choir. Our choir enjoys weekly practices and we have hired a church hall for our residents’ debut performance! We are especially excited to be accompanied by the voices of young choristers from local musicians who regularly perform in our home. The choir has proved to be a wonderfully inclusive and therapeutic activity for our residents. Whether they receive residential care, live with dementia or have nursing needs, it is something they all enjoy together.

In terms of our facilities at Allanbank, every suite has a kitchenette and lounge, with each small group of residents very much like a close-knit family. Our chef prepares delicious home-cooked meals which they enjoy in dining rooms in each suite. Loved ones are welcome to visit whenever they like and make themselves at home, putting the kettle on for a cup of tea. Having separate kitchenette areas means we can support residents with activities like baking and cake decorating.

Our residents are very proud of Montgomery’s, which is the hub of the home. There is a small bar area with a piano and non-alcoholic drinks and snacks. Some residents love to challenge one another to a game on our electronic darts board or watch a movie in the cinema area.

We have a library room with a range of titles, videos and DVDs which residents and their loved ones help themselves too and are regularly refreshed by the local library. There is also a hairdressing salon with a nail bar if anyone fancies being preened or pampered. Allanbank also has a private family room if residents’ loved ones wish to stay overnight.
