Set in the traditional mining village of Easington Colliery, Ashwood Park is a thriving residential and nursing home run by a team of truly devoted staff.
Providing residential, dementia, nursing, palliative, end of life and respite care, we are a home for life. Our experienced team can support our residents’ needs as they evolve over time, so we are with you every step of the way.
There are so many social activities to enjoy at Ashwood Park. A firm favourite when it comes to activities are regular film nights, where everyone gets into their pyjamas and slippers. With plenty of popcorn and hot chocolate, we watch old classics like The Sound of Music and modern musicals like The Greatest Showman.
Our vintage-style singer gives personal performances in residents’ doorways if they are nursed in bed, bringing the sound of the 1940s straight to them.
Wonderful for our residents’ well-being, we have an abundance of four-legged friends who visit us and other residential and nursing homes across Durham for pet therapy, from guinea pigs and rabbits to well-behaved dogs. We also have two budgies – and our own ducks!
There is a hair salon at Ashwood Park, with vintage electric hood dryers. A hairdresser visits for weekly appointments and some of our residents also love pampering sessions with hand massages and manicures.
Special places for reminiscence
In our Willow Suite, for our residents living with dementia, we have an old-fashioned quiet lounge. There is no television in this bright and sunny room, which overlooks the beautiful gardens. Instead, there is a vintage jukebox so residents can listen to their favourite songs. Family and friends can also bring in playlists which can be played through the jukebox.
This suite features themed walls. Respecting the area’s mining history, we have created a wall filled of nostalgic photos of the miners and facts about the colliery. We also have another wall featuring The Royal Family and one dedicated to musical legends like The Rat Pack.
Our residents adore the nursing care home’s sensory garden. Filled with bird feeders, the residents enjoy listening to the birdsong and the sound of the water feature. Many enjoy planting flowers and making hanging baskets, which are wonderful gifts for their relatives.
Adjacent to Ashwood Park is Sanctuary Care’s Birchwood Court Residential Care Home, which provides residential and dementia care. Our residents enjoy getting together for special occasions like the summer fete. The homes also share a minibus, so residents can enjoy regular trips to places in Peterlee and the surrounding Durham area, including Hartlepool Marina and Beamish Museum.
We regularly organise trips to Seaham, where our residents love to visit Lickety Split for traditional ice cream. Some of our residents also enjoy outings to their favourite pub for lunch over a pint.
Our respite care breaks
We also offer short-term respite breaks, which can be pre-booked in advance. These are a lifeline for caregivers in our local community who care for an older relative at home and need a short break. You can have the peace of mind that your loved one is in a homely environment, where our devoted team will support them with a high standard of care.
Our 2022 weekly care fees for residential care start from £869, and £1,063 for nursing care, but may be in the region of 20% more*, depending on your care needs and the type of bedroom that is right for you, from our standard rooms through to our premium bedroom options. *If you require more specialist care such as 1-2-1 support, your weekly fee could be higher.
